So eternal & monstrous in it's scale & complexity, it has over 10 mini-stories going on at once, making this novel HBO's little pot-of-gold! This planet's desert was made only for the elect; in fitness, in stamina, for the supremely frugal & it's only resource is the most valuable material in the universe, the Spice. A drug that extends life, instills wisdom & makes inter-planetary travel possible. However, the only downside is who controls it all. With thousands of different families who control individual planets that come to Dune every year seeking 'melánge', most will usually go home with next to nothing, destined to die from withdrawl symptoms. Just finding out who, or more likely what, the God Emperor is, you can begin to understand how the universe became so visciously rigid & political. If Lucas teamed up with Spielberg on this book to make a string of block-buster movies from the series, no-one would have ever heard of Star Wars. Dune is littered with history, politics, assasinations & the monstrous scale of their heighliners is just mind-blowing.
